Eclipse Audio System
An innovative, space-saving design inspired by an eclipse, integrating modern music formats and high sound quality with a visually striking form.
This innovative wall-mounted turntable music system was designed to address the issue of unused turntables and media due to system complexity and space inefficiency. The design process began with user research, interviewing five end-users to understand their needs and preferences. Key insights showed that physical media often becomes obsolete and turntables are frequently set aside due to space constraints and aesthetic disruption.
The ideation phase involved extensive sketching, leading to a unique form factor inspired by an eclipse. The turntable’s disc moves back and forth on a linear motion, covering an LED like the moon covering the sun, with light shining through translucent vinyl discs. The theme board drew inspiration from Dieter Rams’ and Teenage Engineering’s designs, while the mood board focused on the colorful, visible nature of modern vinyl.
The prototype included a touchscreen and supported Apple AirPlay, Spotify, and various modern music formats. Although the needle didn’t sit perfectly on the record, the system successfully played music with high sound quality. The LEDs behind the turntable illuminated beautifully, adding to the visual appeal. A wiring diagram was created in advance, ensuring everything functioned smoothly.
