Swing Cabinet

The purpose of this project was to design an all-new organizational system based on research through interpersonal interviews. The final aesthetics were required to conform to the design language of Crate and Barrel or Pottery Barn.

Met with 3 different people who gave input on different aspects of organization in bathrooms, closets, and kitchens. Three different design paths were chosen, shoe rack, easy reach kitchen cabinet and shower rack. Using the feedback from the research done, the first sketches were completed based the three separate paths. Based on design team feedback, slight changes were made to improve the designs in a subtle way, not losing sight of the original design. After returning to the interviewees and discussing the concepts and potential outcome, the easy reach cabinet concept was selected.

The mock-up helped visualize the concept and determine the height at which the pull-down section should rest at. In CAD, cutouts were placed in the shelves for specific shaped plates that won’t allow them to slide when opening and closing the cabinet. The top part of the door is designed to swing up at the same time the rest of the unit is pulled downwards. The final product is planned to have an electronic unit to help those who are unable to pull down the cabinet or reach the handle. The handle and materials were selected from a palette of traditional Crate and Barrel furniture.
